Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ worked their magic with a back-porch kind of ease. Trading licks and life truths, they let the songs do the talking—while Anne Harris stitched golden threads through the set like a spirit stirred by the sound.
Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan played host to a truly special evening on Thursday as blues titans Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ brought their “TajMo” tour to a beautiful outdoor setting. Under a canopy of stars and a waning strawberry moon, the 2025 edition of this collaborative project proved why these two legends are a match made in blues heaven.
Since first teaming up for an album and tour in 2017, Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ have honed their joint performance to perfection. Leading a stellar seven-piece band, the duo masterfully wove together their distinct styles throughout the night. They effortlessly traded vocals and guitar licks, dipping into classics from their extensive solo careers, unveiling fresh material, and revisiting beloved hits from their individual catalogs.
A palpable theme of peace, love, unity, and harmony resonated through their chosen setlist. It felt like a deliberate and heartfelt message, delivered with every note and lyric especially on their new hit “Room on the Porch.” You’d be hard-pressed to find a more perfectly matched modern-day acoustic blues duo; their chemistry is undeniable and their interplay seamless.
A standout performer of the evening was the incredibly talented Anne Harris. Her contributions were integral to the band’s rich sound. Primarily on her violin, Harris added beautiful textures and soaring melodies. But her versatility didn’t stop there; she also provided excellent background vocals, and even took the lead on a couple of songs, showcasing her remarkable breadth as a musician.
The “TajMo” concert at Frederick Meijer Gardens was not only a spectacular evening of music and good will but a testament to the enduring power of the blues and the magic that happens when two masters come together.
